From a short-term role to a consultant in Business Consulting, Maria’s journey is defined by curiosity, courage, and growth - showing how support and opportunity can shape a truly fulfilling career at Grant Thornton Cyprus.

Starting out

When I joined Grant Thornton Cyprus in May 2022, it was meant to be something temporary. Back then, there was an opening for a receptionist role, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to gain some experience. I had no idea at the time how much this step would shape my career journey.

I started as an Administrator in the Internal Functions Department, handling everything from engagement letters to client calls. What truly motivated me was the culture around me: people were passionate, dedicated, and took ownership of their work. Seeing that inspired me to aim higher and discover what more I could do within the firm.

Taking new steps

My first internal move was to the Payroll Outsourcing Department, and with it came the opportunity to pursue an MBA funded by Grant Thornton. That offer alone motivated me to take the leap.

At first, I was intimidated by the technical nature of payroll, but the team was very supportive. With their guidance, I learned quickly, took on more responsibilities, started communicating directly with clients, and even mentored a junior colleague – something I never imagined doing so early in my career.

Finding my way in consulting

At the beginning of 2024, I transitioned into the Business Consulting Department, seeking a more project-based environment that aligned with my MBA studies and personal interests. The shift was challenging, but the projects were stimulating, and my team encouraged me every step of the way.

Each move I made within Grant Thornton built on the last. From administration, I learned the importance of structure and client service. From payroll, I developed precision and discipline. Now, in consulting, I have been able to combine all that experience into something more strategic and creative.

“Looking back, I am amazed by how much I have grown and by how supported I have felt through every step of the journey.”

Broadening my perspective

Today, I am part of a team working on a large-scale project with the Union of Municipalities and local municipalities across Cyprus, helping implement new systems that touch payroll, administration, and training. It is a complex but rewarding experience that allows me to apply everything I have learned so far and see the real-world impact of our work.

I have also realised that Grant Thornton is a place where growth does not stop at national borders. If I ever decided to explore opportunities beyond Cyprus, I know I would have the full support of my managers and even our CEO. That kind of openness is rare, and it makes a big difference.

What “as it should be” means to me

For me, a career as it should be is about balance between challenge and support, ambition and encouragement. It is about being part of a team that trusts you to take on new experiences but also gives you the space to do so.

At Grant Thornton, I have always felt that growth is a shared effort. You are given space to learn, people who guide you when you need it, and opportunities that stretch you in the best way possible. That is what as it should be means to me: a career that helps you become the best version of yourself, both professionally and personally.

“A career does not need to follow a straight line. You just need to have the courage to take the next step and be surrounded by people who believe in you.”
